Right after Thanksgiving, as the stock market took its most dizzying plunge yet, the money pundits were finally ready to use the dreaded R word. So it’s now official: the United States is in a recession … and the rest of the world too. But the average American, struggling with everything from soaring gas prices to sinking value of retirement portfolios, has been using the R word for at least a year, and hasn’t had any difficulty verifying the scary fact for themselves. With everybody cutting back on discretionary spending, it’s not surprising that U.S. sports are feeling the pinch.

It was a bittersweet moment in Beijing. After being undefeated throughout 22 games and three Olympiads of softball being an Olympic sport, and three gold medals, the law of averages finally caught up with the U.S. women’s team. They got all the way to the finals, only to run into the buzzsaw of Japanese pitcher Yukiko Ueno. The final score was 3-1, with the U.S. having to settle for silver.
Softball was accepted by the IOC for the Atlanta Summer Games in 1996. For eight years, despite American efforts to popularize the sport, softball is off the program as of London 2012, and there isn’t a dry eye in the ball-playing world.
