Jack Mackenroth takes a break from his design-related and media duties to compete at the Outgames

Jack Mackenroth's life has been a roller coaster of highs and lows. It was nearly two years ago when what seemed like the greatest opportunity of his life was quickly snatched from him; although he was a definitive fan favorite on the fourth season of Project Runway, he was forced to leave the show after just a few episodes due to medical reasons. What could have been a crushing defeat to the accomplished designer, however, simply led to many more incredible opportunities — not just in the design world but in media and activism.

Is there such a thing as too much sports in one’s life?

I will admit: I have a tendency to take sports a little too seriously. Well, depending on whom you ask. My Monday night volleyball team regularly has to put up with me shouting things like “I’m glad you think this is funny, Carlos!” and “No, Tony, we’re not just here to have a good time!”

It’s about to get worse.

Our inspiration comes from far and wide

When we first developed the concept of a gay sports magazine we weren’t sure how our readers would react to the idea. Many people thought “gay” and “sports” could never be mentioned in the same sentence. While we know Compete is certainly groundbreaking – the first gay sports magazine in print – we want to recognize the athletes and sports fans that paved the way for our idea.

Hearts & Iron is the continuing comic book saga written by Arizonan Jeff Jacklin about Carl Hanson and John Sullivan, two athletic men who challenge the image that society has portrayed of gay men.
“It’s a healthy image for people who are either not out or don’t fit the stereotypical gay man image,” Jacklin said. “These are strong men who deal with all issues in society, not just being gay.”
